Walter Riley Thurmond III was born in Hollywood, California on August 12, 1987. Walter Thurmond was considered one of the state’s fastest players while he attended West Covina High School. Walter Thurmond helped lead his team to CIF Southern Section Division VII championship and a 11-2-1 record. During his senior year the 6’0” 180 cornerback made 29 receptions for 730 yards and seven touchdowns.
Walter Thurmond received all-San Gabriel Valley Region honors after making 85 tackles and five interceptions in one season. Along with that honor Walter Thurmond received first-team all-San Antonio League, all-CIF and all-Valley honors during high school. Walter Thurmond III was singled out for outstanding scout team play on six occasions during his redshirt season with the Oregon Ducks. In 2006, Thurmond started 12 games for the Oregon Ducks and emerged as one of the top defensive backs in the Pac-10. Walter Thurmond III earned honorable mention all-conference and third-team freshman All-America honors.
In 2007, Walter Thurmond was Oregon Ducks second-leading tackler and 13 game starter. Thurmond finished as the co-leader in the Pacific-10 Conference in passes defended with 23. Walter also earned defensive player of the week honors in consecutive weeks. #6, Walter Thurmond, battled injuries for most of the 2008 season. Thurmond still started 12 of 13 games and tied for first in the Pac-10 with five interceptions. Walter Thurmond III earned the special teams game ball for his work in the seasons last game.
